Dresser Segregation – Yes, really.

November 25th, 2013

So this one day, I was putting our clothes away, and somehow, we got to discussing how I was putting them away, which led to me explaining to Master why I put the clothes away the way that I do. Then I lamented the fact that there was an uneven number of drawers, and asked if he minded if I put our socks in the same drawer. He said, “You don’t have to keep our clothes segregated. I think I know what’s yours and what’s mine.” And I just kinda laughed him off.

Is this not a thing, this segregation of one’s things? Most couples I know each have their own dressers, and the closet is divided right down the middle.

Unless one of them has a shoe fetish. Shoe fetishists never can seem to keep their shoes on their own side…because there are just too many of them. Shoe fetishists rarely date other shoe fetishists, and I think this is why.

Since I’ve lived with Master, I’ve never had my own dresser. We had two dressers, once, but one was filled with toys, so we crammed the rest of our clothes in the closet. When we moved into a one bedroom to save money, we put the toys in our footlocker, and figured out a way to fit all of our clothing in the more practical of the two (a tall, narrow chest of drawers with finger lips instead of handles that would stick out, hogging up precious walking space), since our closets would have to store the things we couldn’t display. We gave the other one to a new couple with babies. There just wasn’t room in the apartment for it.

When I was explaining to Master the way that I put things in the dresser, I couldn’t think of a way to vocalize why I felt the need to separate all of our stuff into different drawers. It’s not really about having my own space. In fact, if he thought it was about having my own space, he’d probably remind me that I don’t have the right to my own space. It’s more about knowing where things are when I’m looking for them.

One of Master’s dirty little secrets involves dresser drawers. You know how teenage girls have a habit of taking everything out and trying it on and leaving it laying around? Master’s version of this is taking it out, looking at it, wadding it up, and stuffing it back in the drawer.

When Master told me I didn’t need to segregate our stuff, I put our shirts side by side in the two top drawers, and our pants in the two bottom drawers. And within two days, I had to fold the clothes to find any of my shirts.

So…I segregate our clothes. I figure it’s in his best interest since he’s always rushing me to get ready. I’m just helping him out, really.

We have separate everything, even bedrooms. We don’t sleep together mainly because we’re on different schedules and we keep each other awake if we try to sleep in the same bed. So we each have our own closets and dressers too.

This made me giggle a little. I’ve always had separate drawer/closet space, even when we shared the same closet. I don’t think I even know anyone that shares drawers (though we do split a dresser.)

We have one walk in type closet, and he has the top 2 shelves and I have the bottom 4. I just have more clothes so I need more space. We do share a hangers area though for coats etc
