Lose weight to lose weight? Ffs. But the mountains! Now there’s a good reason.

July 30th, 2011

So that whole “getting into shape” thing? We just kicked it into seriously high gear. In the past five days, we’ve walked 12.5 miles, which isn’t much for people who’ve been doing this forever, but is huge for a couple fatties like us. Until recently, you’d be lucky to get us to walk more than a mile at a time unless there was a Geocache or a Farmers Market at the end.

We bought a new scale. The old one was busted. Unfortunately, we know for sure the old one was busted because it kept saying M weighs 298. He actually weighs 306. I weighed in at 244.6. Course, it was the end of the day, and we both had clothes on. But I’m gonna go ahead and say that’s pretty accurate.

Yesterday, we walked 4 miles. It wasn’t intended. At a mile, we realized we still had energy left. At a mile and a half, we were practically bouncing. At a mile and three-quarters, we weren’t bouncing anymore. We both had to pee! But we were so close! So we pushed on. At two and a quarter we stopped to pee in the woods, and then the sky opened up. Visibility was about 50 feet. Our clothes were dripping. The high tops on my boots were rubbing my ankles raw. But we were still a mile and a half from the car, so we kept on truckin. And laughing. And yelling at the sky. And splashing in puddles. And dumping the rest of our water bottles on each other.

It’s still not because we want to lose weight. I mean, yeah, we do. But not for losing weight’s sake.

There’s this group called the Adirondack 46ers. M found them by accident when He was looking around for information on the Adirondack trail system. They’re people who have climbed to the top of the Adirondacks’ 46 main peaks. The views are amazing. The experience of carrying just what you need for a few days’ trip is insane. And after reading a couple blogs, M was set.

We’re gonna do the 46 peaks.

That means getting in shape. And in some cases, that means losing weight. I mean, I dunno about you, but I’m not really interested in trusting 244 pounds of weight to the tips of my fingers and toes. I know I’m not strong enough right now. And we may never be strong enough to do some of them. But the less intense ones? We’re definitely hoping to be in a place, physically, where we can start working on them next year.

So that’s where we’re at, right now. Training. Slave training too! M says it’s time to get us all back in order. From the floorboards to the mental cupboards. Off we go!
